Torque:
Load cell with digital panel meter and digital printer. Automatic torque cut off. Field calibration system. Provision for break-away (static) friction measurement.

Wear:

Continuous display dial indicator on lever arm. Allows rate of wear and total wear measurement. Each division is.0002" or .002" depending on lever ratio. An optional electronic wear measuring system is available for use on Falex Recording Systems and Data Acquisition Systems.

Specimen Temperature:

Panel mounted digital indicator and digital thermal printer. Adjustable automatic temperature limit cut-off. Thermocouple included.

Test Time:

Digital timer/controller for automatic start or shut off.

Cycle Counter:

Panel mounted cycle counter with automatic high limit cut-off.

Motor:

2 HP, variable speed DC motor.

Drive System:

The unit is equipped with a 2 HP, variable speed motor with a ¡¾0.5% accuracy (full scale) and is configured for 220 V, single phase, 50 or 60 cycles.

The motor drives the upper vertical shaft. The lower shaft is stationary. The speed is controlled using a control potentiometer with speed ranges from 60 to 3600 rpm. Optional pulley configurations allow speeds from ¨ö to 7200 rpm. The 10,000 to 1 gear reduction, available with the optional stick/slip adapter, allows speed control to 0.01 rpm.

Oscillatory motion is also available in standard and high-speed versions enabling simulation of start/stop motion. Maximum oscillation is 90¡Æ.

Loading:

Load is applied through a two-position lever having a 2:1 or 10:1 ratio. The 2:1 lever ratio is for loads from ¨ö lbs. to 80 lbs. The 10:1 lever ratio is for loads from 20 lbs. To 807.5 lbs. Optionally, a microprocessor controlled loading system is available. This is an electronically regulated pneumatic system, which eliminates the use of weights and is totally programmable for ramping and soaking times. This option is standard with the Microprocessor Controlled Data Acquisition and Control System and may be added to the standard Digital Instrumentation System. Applied loads are from 30 to 800 lbs. standard and from 5 to 60 lbs. With optional low load option.

Environments:

Tests can be performed in environments to simulate field conditions. Test specimens can be coated or the entire test area submerged in fluid. More severe testing may be achieved by running in a dry condition. This is desirable when evaluating solid film lubricants or self-lubricated materials. Test can be run at elevated temperatures to 150¡ÆC. (300¡Æ F) or cooled to -30¡Æ C (-22¡Æ F). Additionally, controlled humidity, inert gasses or other special atmospheres can be introduced by using a closed chamber. With the optional recirculation system, a constant flow of filtered and/or heated fluid may be introduced to the test area.

Temperature Control:

Temperature control is through he use of a programmable controller. The unit includes a table heater for dry atmosphere tests and a chamber heater for elevated fluid tests. Two low temperature chambers are available one for use with a solvent/dry ice or water/ice slurry and one for use with a mechanically refrigerated recirculating bath. The temperature controller is designed to automatically start the test machine after fluid or specimens reach the desired test temperature.

Friction Measurements:

The lower shaft transmits a signal through a load cell for determining torque. Coefficient of friction can be determined from this torque value through calculations unique to each specimen configuration.

Wear Measurement:

Each machine is equipped with a micrometer-type wear-indicating device. This is designed to advise if accelerated or catastrophic wear is occurring. An optional electronic wear device can be chosen incorporating an LVDT and an analog chart recorder for permanently recording wear data.

Instrumentation System:

The standard Digital instrumentation System includes panel mounted digital meters for monitoring torque, time, cycles, and specimen temperature, all worth high-limit, cut-off capabilities. In addition, the system includes a panel mounted temperature controller, speed indicator and printer for digitally recording friction and specimen temperature. The Digital Instrumentation System can also interface to a chart recorder or data acquisition system. A maximum of 6 outputs: torque, wear, specimen temperature, environment temperature, test load, and test speed can be monitored.

A Microprocessor Data Acquisition and Control System is available. This system automates and expands the features offered with the Digital Instrumentation System in a computer based system. Test variables and data can be controlled and logged. The system is designed for keyboard entry of test parameters. Hardware includes a colour video display, operator keyboard, data acquisition printer, test machine/microprocessor interfacing, menu-driven, user-friendly software, fixed-disk drive a 3¨ö inch floppy diskette drive, user memory RAM, Internal Cartridge Tape Drive and Internal Modem.
