The Falex Four-Ball Wear Test Machine is used to measure the wear and frictional characteristics
of lubricants under a variety of test conditions. The machine is available in two models, Standard
and Variable Drive.
The Standard machine has a single speed ½ HP motor with pulleys to drive the rotating ball at
speeds of 600, 1200 and 1800 rpm. The load is applied through a lever arm with loads up to 50
kilograms on the ball specimen. The temperature range is ambient to 232°C.
The Falex Four-Ball Variable Drive Wear Test Machine is capable of loading to 180 kilograms. This
is accomplished with an air pressure system on a piston. A variable speed 1 HP motor drives the
top ball from 60 to 3600 rpm and 1 rpm to a maximum of 10,000 rpm with optional pulley
arrangements. Temperature can be controlled to 232°C and there is provision for controlling the
atmosphere above the test oil.
Both models of the Falex Four-Ball Wear Tester are built with air thrust bearings. Digital electronic
friction measuring system is available on the Variable Drive Wear Test Machine.
An optional adapter can be used to replace the three stationary balls with flat disks. This allows the
use of a variety of different materials not generally available in ball form. A new test using this
adapter is the Ball-on-Three-Disks (B.O.T.D.) which incorporates a rotating ½ " test ball against the
three disks. This test is effective in evaluating wear properties of low viscosity fluids such as diesel
fuels.

Replaces standard dead weight loading. This pneumatic system allows automatic electronic
loading of test machines. Eight-point ramp and soak loop. Air is required.

Test balls conform to ASTM D 2266, D 2596, D 2783 and D 4172 (500/box).
F-1519-55 Ball-on-Three Disk (B.O.T.D.) Specimen Set:
Ball-on-Three Disk (B.O.T.D.) specimens have a ¼" O.D.
Specimen tests are run against a ½" rotating ball. This test has been found useful in evaluating
wear characteristics of low viscosity fluids such as fuels. Set includes 30 specimen disks and 10
balls. (Runs 10 evaluations). Use with F-1519-9.
